A recent campaign ad for Vice President Harris, narrated by actor Julia Roberts, has stirred significant controversy among conservatives. The ad, aimed at encouraging women to vote for Harris even if their husbands support former President Trump, also touches on the topic of abortion rights, a critical issue in the election. Roberts’ voiceover is paired with visuals of a woman voting for Harris, then subtly acknowledging another female voter, while her husband inquires about her voting choice.
The reaction from Republicans has been vehement. Some commentators equate a wife voting differently from her husband to marital infidelity. For example, Fox News host Jesse Watters expressed on air that discovering his wife voted for Harris would feel like a betrayal akin to an affair. Other GOP figures, like Charlie Kirk, have also voiced strong objections, arguing that the ad portrays wives deceitfully undermining their husbands by voting secretly for Harris, which he found demeaning and disrespectful.
In contrast, former Representative Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), a notable Republican supporting Harris, ridiculed these conservative reactions on the social platform X, labeling Kirk a “twit” and urging women to make their own voting decisions. Cheney’s support for Harris highlights the split within the Republican ranks and underscores the broader themes of individual choice and privacy in voting that the ad seeks to emphasize.
