Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations has issued an urgent plea to the U.N. Security Council, urging immediate global intervention to stop Israel’s military campaign and prevent U.S. involvement especially in the wake of President Trump’s latest threats, which sent shockwaves through Tehran.
In a formal letter obtained by Newsweek, Iranian U.N. envoy Amir Saeid Iravani accused Israel of launching a “deliberate, premeditated, and large-scale act of aggression” against Iran, allegedly carried out “in full coordination with the United States.” The appeal paints a dire picture of escalating tensions and points squarely at Trump’s rhetoric as a trigger for panic inside Iran.
“The situation has dangerously escalated,” Iravani wrote, citing “mounting and undeniable evidence” of direct U.S. involvement, including “explicit statements and provocative actions by senior U.S. officials.” He singled out Trump’s public threats to strike Iran’s nuclear sites and his warning about potentially targeting Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei statements that appear to have pushed Tehran into emergency diplomatic mode.
Iran’s leadership, already reeling from days of Israeli airstrikes that have killed top commanders and damaged strategic infrastructure, reportedly views Trump’s remarks as a serious signal that the U.S. may enter the conflict directly. Sources close to the Iranian military told state media that air defense systems have been placed on high alert around key facilities, and bunker preparations have intensified at suspected nuclear sites.
In his letter, Iravani called for an emergency session of the Security Council, which includes the five veto-wielding permanent members: the U.S., China, Russia, the U.K., and France. He urged the body to condemn what he described as the “unlawful use of force” and officially recognize Israel’s actions as acts of “aggression.” He further demanded that the Council take binding measures to prevent any foreign power especially the U.S. from deepening the conflict.
Iran’s ambassador warned that failure to act would lead to “far-reaching and irreversible consequences for international peace and security,” and reiterated that Iran would invoke its “inherent right” to self-defense under international law if provoked further.
The appeal comes just hours after Trump doubled down on his threats via social media, declaring that Iran’s leadership should “prepare for the consequences” if they continue to escalate hostilities. Iranian state-run broadcasters interrupted programming to air footage of missile stockpiles and military drills, as a visibly shaken Tehran attempts to rally both international support and domestic morale in the face of what it now considers a genuine threat of U.S. military intervention.
