Hillary Clinton couldn’t help but laugh when President Trump, during his inauguration speech on Monday, declared his intention to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”
In his address, Trump stated, “America will reclaim its rightful place as the greatest, most powerful, most respected nation on Earth, inspiring the awe and admiration of the entire world.” He then announced plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico and to restore the original name of Mount McKinley to the peak currently known as Mount Denali, sparking amusement from Clinton, who was present among other distinguished guests.
Earlier in the day, one of Trump’s aides had hinted that these changes were on the administration’s agenda, including the controversial renaming of these well-known geographical landmarks.
The proposal to rename the Gulf had previously faced criticism, including from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. She joked earlier this month, “I mean obviously Gulf of Mexico, the name is recognized by the United Nations, an organism of the United Nations. But next, why don’t we call it ‘Mexican America’? It sounds nice, doesn’t it?”
The rivalry between Trump and Clinton, stemming from the 2016 election where Trump emerged victorious, has seen Clinton remain an outspoken critic of his policies and actions.
