Senator Lindsey Graham recently voiced his agreement with former 2024 presidential candidate Nikki Haley, emphasizing the importance of focusing on policy discussions in the upcoming election. Graham’s comments came during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” where he addressed the direction of former President Donald Trump’s campaign. Haley had previously suggested that Trump should avoid making the election about Vice President Kamala Harris’s race or intelligence and should instead concentrate on policy issues that are critical to the nation.
Graham acknowledged Haley’s viewpoint, particularly her assertion that the Trump campaign “can’t win” by focusing on personal attacks against Harris. He agreed that it is crucial for Trump to center his campaign around policy debates, especially those concerning the economy, border security, and inflation, which are key issues for many voters. Graham emphasized that Harris’s policy decisions as vice president, and what she would likely do as president, should be the focal points of criticism. He argued that a policy-focused debate would be advantageous for Trump and could lead to a successful campaign outcome.
However, Graham went a step further by inviting Haley to actively join him on the campaign trail for Trump, rather than merely offering advice from the sidelines. He suggested that prominent Republicans, including Haley, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, should unite in their efforts to support Trump, rather than simply critiquing his campaign strategy on television. Graham underscored the importance of collective action, stating that it’s more impactful for these leaders to campaign together for Trump than to provide public commentary on his campaign.
In his remarks, Graham reiterated that while Trump’s persona as a provocateur and showman might not resonate with all voters, his policy positions are solid and beneficial for the country. He urged Trump to use the final 80 days of the campaign to articulate clear plans on how he would address pressing issues like the economy and border security. Graham firmly believes that focusing on policy is the key to securing a victory in the upcoming election and that Trump’s campaign should pivot towards this strategy to ensure success.
