GOP Senator Backstabs Trump

Sen. Lisa Murkowski Reflects on Her Republican Identity Amid Party Shifts

Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska recently characterized herself as “more of a Ronald Reagan Republican” than a supporter of the party’s shift toward Trump. Her remarks, made during an event hosted by the centrist group No Labels in Washington, underscored her independence and her commitment to serving her constituents over adhering strictly to party lines.

“I don’t think I’ve made any secret of the fact that I’m more of a Ronald Reagan Republican than I am a Trump Republican,” Murkowski stated, according to Politico. She acknowledged that some have questioned her party loyalty, saying, “Someone said, ‘Well, you aren’t really a Republican at all.’ And I said, ‘You can call me whatever you want to call me.’”

Murkowski emphasized her preference for action over labels, noting, “I’m not attached to a label. I’d rather be known for trying to do right by the state and the people that I serve, regardless of party.” Despite this, she maintained, “I have never shed my party label. I am still a Republican.”

The senator’s comments reflect ongoing tensions within the Republican Party as it increasingly aligns with Trump. Murkowski, who did not vote for Trump in the 2016, 2020, or 2024 elections, has expressed discomfort with the party’s direction. She was also one of seven Republican senators who voted to convict Trump for his role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

Earlier this year, Murkowski hinted at her independent streak during an interview, expressing concern over the party’s trajectory. “I think I’m very independent-minded,” she said. “I just regret that our party is seemingly becoming a party of Trump.” When asked about her future plans, she offered a candid but cautious response: “I am navigating my way through some very interesting political times, so let’s just leave it at that.”

For many Americans, especially those who value bipartisan cooperation, Murkowski’s stance serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing principles over party allegiance. Her perspective resonates with older voters who may recall Ronald Reagan’s era as a time of conservative ideals balanced with optimism and a focus on unity. In an increasingly polarized political landscape, her voice reflects a desire for thoughtful governance that transcends party divisions.
