GOP Fails To Win In Trump Dominant District

Democrat Sam Sutton has won a special election for a New York state Senate seat, fending off a Republican attempt to flip a district that leans conservative, according to projections from Decision Desk HQ.

Sutton, a businessman and longtime nonprofit leader, defeated Republican Nachman Caller, an attorney who previously made a run for state Assembly. The victory ensures the seat remains under Democratic control following the resignation of former state Sen. Simcha Felder, who stepped down last month to join the New York City Council.

The outcome was uncertain heading into election night, given Felder’s record as a conservative Democrat who often caucused with the Republican conference. He regularly appeared unopposed on both the Democratic and Republican ballot lines. The Senate District, which includes parts of Brooklyn, showed strong support for President Trump in the last presidential election.

However, the district also contains a large Orthodox Jewish population. Sutton, who co-leads the Sephardic Community Federation, has deep connections within the local Sephardic community ties that likely played a significant role in his success.

Sutton has prioritized a platform focused on public safety through community-driven solutions, increased education funding, and clean energy development.
