Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah) has predicted that Vice President-elect J.D. Vance will be the Republican Party’s nominee for president in 2028. Speaking during his congressional exit interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Romney reflected on the future of the GOP and its alignment with Donald Trump’s MAGA movement.
“MAGA is the Republican Party, and Donald Trump is the Republican Party today,” Romney remarked. When asked about the party’s leadership after Trump, he responded, “If you were to ask me who the nominee will be in 2028, it’ll be J.D. Vance.”
Romney acknowledged that Vance, chosen by Trump as his running mate, is poised to lead the GOP because of his intelligence, strong communication skills, and commitment to the MAGA platform. Despite his past criticisms of both Trump and Vance, Romney refrained from revisiting those disagreements during the interview. He noted that he and Vance have since worked together in the Senate.
Looking ahead, Romney emphasized that both political parties will need to reassess their strategies to connect with voters, particularly those who shifted their support from the left to the right in the last election. The senator’s comments suggest that the Republican Party’s future will remain deeply influenced by Trump’s vision and the leaders he has elevated.
