Jonathan Turley, a legal analyst for Fox News, criticized President-elect Trump’s recent comments about jailing members of the former House panel on the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. In his first interview since winning the election, Trump told NBC News anchor Kirsten Welker that he wouldn’t specifically order his appointees to target political enemies. However, he hinted at imprisoning those who served on the committee investigating the Capitol attack.
Turley, who has also written opinion pieces for The Hill, stated on his blog that there is no viable criminal case against the Jan. 6 Committee members for their investigation or report. He emphasized the need to move beyond “rage rhetoric” for the country to unite and face future challenges.
Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), a member of the Jan. 6 committee, responded to Trump’s comments in a statement to The Hill. She asserted that Trump attempted to overturn the 2020 presidential election and seize power. Cheney accused Trump of mobilizing an angry mob to attack the Capitol, where they assaulted police officers and disrupted the counting of electoral votes. She highlighted that Trump watched the violence unfold on television and refused to tell the mob to leave for hours.
