Singer Madonna took aim at President Trump on Friday over a recent social media post in which he appeared to refer to himself as a “king.”
“I thought this country was built by Europeans escaping the rule of a king to establish a New World governed by the people,” Madonna wrote on X. “Currently, we have a president who calls himself … Our King.”
“If this is a joke, I’m not laughing,” the “Like a Prayer” singer added.
The exchange comes just days after the Trump administration announced that it would rescind the Biden-era congestion pricing plan for New York City. Following the decision, Trump celebrated on Truth Social, declaring, “CONGESTION PRICING IS DEAD. Manhattan, and all of New York, is SAVED. LONG LIVE THE KING!”
The White House then amplified the message, sharing a post on X that featured a Time magazine-style image of Trump wearing a crown, with Manhattan in the background. Instead of the usual Time masthead, the graphic read “TRUMP” along with the phrase “Long live the king.”
At 66, Madonna is just one of many vocal critics who have expressed concerns about the president embracing the title of “king.”
