Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), an Iraq War veteran who lost her legs in combat, expressed strong disapproval of former President Trump’s recent comments about the Medal of Honor. Duckworth, a Purple Heart recipient, labeled Trump’s remarks as “despicable” and asserted that he is unfit to serve as commander in chief. She noted that Trump’s comments are consistent with his previous derogatory views on military service members, referring to them as “suckers and losers.”
Duckworth contrasted the Republican ticket, led by Trump and Senator JD Vance (R-Ohio), with the Democratic ticket, led by Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. She emphasized the importance of choosing leaders who genuinely respect and advocate for veterans, highlighting Walz’s leadership on veteran issues, particularly those related to burn pits.
The interview followed widespread criticism of Trump for comparing the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the Medal of Honor during an event. Trump suggested that the civilian award was superior to the Medal of Honor because recipients of the latter are often injured or deceased, while Miriam Adelson, the Medal of Freedom recipient he referenced, is “a healthy, beautiful woman.” Trump’s remarks sparked outrage across social media, with Democrats, including the Harris campaign, using the incident to criticize his views on veterans and service members.
The Harris campaign responded by reminding Americans of Trump’s history of insulting military heroes, including Gold Star families and prisoners of war, underscoring the necessity of ensuring Trump does not return to the role of commander in chief.
