Dems Get More Bad News

A new poll conducted by The New York Times and Ipsos suggests that many Americans believe the Democratic Party is not prioritizing economic issues.

When asked about the issues they consider most important to the Democratic Party, only 17% of respondents cited “the economy/inflation.” In contrast, 31% said “abortion” and “gay/lesbian/transgender policy” were the party’s primary concerns.

The results come in the wake of President Donald Trump’s reelection, along with Republican victories in the Senate and continued control of the House, leaving the Democratic Party struggling to redefine its identity after the 2024 elections.

Newly appointed Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Ken Martin expressed concerns about the party’s shifting public perception. In an interview with The New York Times, Martin called it “deeply alarming” that for the first time in modern history, a majority of Americans view the Republican Party as the one that best represents the interests of the working class and the poor.

“And that the Democratic Party represents the interests of the wealthy and the elite,” Martin added. “That would suggest we have a huge branding problem because that is not who our party is. We must do a better job making sure people know that wherever they live, wherever they are from, no matter who they are, we are fighting for them and remain their champion in this country.”

The poll also found that 45% of Americans believe “Donald Trump’s policies will help the national economy,” while 39% disagreed.

The Times/Ipsos poll was conducted from January 2 to 10 and surveyed 2,128 people, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.
