Dems Blame Trump For What?

On Sunday, a group of Democrats criticized President Trump for failing to act quickly on his campaign promise to lower grocery prices.

In a letter to the president, they wrote, “We are reaching out to ask about your administration’s plan to make food more affordable for American families. In these first days of your presidency, Americans are grappling with egg shortages caused by an avian flu outbreak and persistently high grocery prices. During your campaign, you repeatedly promised to lower food prices ‘immediately’ upon taking office.”

The letter further stated, “Instead of prioritizing this urgent issue, your first week in office has been focused on mass deportations and granting pardons to January 6 attackers, including those who assaulted Capitol police officers. Your sole action related to costs was an executive order that only briefly mentioned food prices, without outlining any specific policies to address them.”

The Democrats urged Trump to target large food and grocery corporations, which they claim have taken advantage of crises like pandemics and the avian flu to boost profits at the expense of working families. “These companies often use such crises as an excuse to raise prices beyond what is necessary to cover increased costs,” they stated.

During the 2024 campaign, Trump frequently blamed the Biden administration for rising grocery costs, using price hikes on staples like bacon, cereal, and crackers as political talking points.

However, in a December interview, Trump suggested that lowering food prices might not happen immediately. “I’d like to bring them down, but it’s hard to reduce prices once they’ve gone up. It’s very challenging. But I think they will come down eventually. Energy improvements and a better supply chain will help,” he said.

In their letter, the Democrats concluded, “Americans are counting on you to deliver on your promise to lower food prices.”
