Monica Lewinsky reflects on the way former President Bill Clinton handled the aftermath of their affair, which occurred when she was a 22-year-old intern at the White House. She believes the situation could have been managed better, either by Clinton resigning or finding a way to handle things without misleading the public or throwing her under the bus.
In an interview on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, Lewinsky shared her thoughts: “I think the right way to handle it would have been to either step down or simply say it was nobody’s business,” she said. “Or, if he chose to stay in office, he could have done so without lying and without putting the blame on someone who was just beginning her career.”
She acknowledged the complexities of the situation, recognizing the immense power and responsibility that comes with the presidency. “I’m aware of how challenging this must have been, given the enormity of the office,” she added.
Lewinsky also reflected on how both the media and the White House handled the scandal when it became public. “It’s a complicated issue, especially when so many people are affected by what happens,” she explained.
Clinton initially denied any sexual relationship with Lewinsky, but later admitted to it. His admission and the ensuing media frenzy led to his impeachment in 1998. However, the Senate ultimately acquitted him, and he remained in office.
