Cheney Attacks Trump After Biden Pardon

Former Representative Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) sharply criticized President Trump for his misleading statements about the now-defunct January 6th committee, emphasizing that dishonesty does not improve with time.

Cheney’s rebuke followed a speech Trump delivered at the Capitol to supporters who could not attend his inauguration ceremony. During his remarks, Trump perpetuated unfounded claims about the committee, including accusations of evidence tampering. Cheney countered these allegations by pointing out that all committee documents, including final reports and depositions, are publicly accessible online.

In a statement, Cheney highlighted the availability of this information and noted Trump’s ongoing legal access to these materials, underscoring the transparency of the committee’s proceedings. She also recalled a poignant image of Trump during the Capitol riots, describing him as watching the violence unfold on television without intervening to stop his supporters or assist law enforcement.

Trump also used his speech to lambaste Biden’s recent pardon of the nine committee members, derisively referring to Cheney as a “lunatic.” He further criticized other committee members and falsely accused former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) of orchestrating the Capitol attack.

Despite Trump’s allegations, Representative Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) has confirmed that the committee preserved all legally required documents, though it did not keep unused video recordings.

Cheney and Thompson expressed their gratitude towards President Biden for the pardons, which they described as a protective measure against the harassment and criminal threats they faced for fulfilling their official duties. They stressed that the pardons were not admissions of guilt but acknowledgments of their commitment to the law and their constitutional responsibilities.
