Catholic Bishops Turn On Trump

Vice President Vance expressed his disappointment during a Sunday interview, criticizing the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) for not supporting common-sense immigration enforcement. His remarks followed the bishops’ condemnation of several of President Trump’s executive orders on immigration.

In recent days, various Christian organizations have voiced strong opposition to Trump’s immigration actions, arguing that they contradict core Christian principles and put vulnerable communities at risk. Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, president of the USCCB, stated that some of the executive orders, particularly those affecting immigrants and refugees, are deeply concerning and could have harmful consequences. The USCCB also criticized a revised Department of Homeland Security (DHS) policy that removed guidance urging immigration officials to avoid enforcement in sensitive areas such as schools, churches, and healthcare facilities. The bishops stated that non-emergency enforcement in such settings would harm the common good.

During his appearance on CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” Vance, a Catholic himself, expressed disappointment with the bishops’ stance. He questioned whether their humanitarian concerns were genuine or motivated by financial considerations, referencing the USCCB’s receipt of over $100 million annually to assist with resettling immigrants. According to the USCCB, their Migration and Refugee Services department facilitates the resettlement of approximately 18% of refugees entering the U.S. each year.

Trump’s executive orders, which included suspending refugee resettlement programs, led to canceled flights for refugees who had already been approved, leaving many in limbo. Vance argued that not all refugees had been thoroughly vetted, raising concerns about national security.

The USCCB also noted that the new DHS guidelines on sensitive spaces have already created fear among immigrant communities. Immigrants have become hesitant to participate in daily activities, such as sending their children to school or attending religious services. When asked about this, Vance responded that he hopes the policy creates a chilling effect, discouraging illegal immigration. He added that, as a devout Catholic, he hopes the bishops will improve their approach to these issues.

While many clergy members and religious organizations have criticized Trump’s immigration policies, one notable moment occurred when the Right Rev. Mariann Budde, an Episcopal bishop, publicly urged the president to show compassion for immigrants and LGBTQ+ individuals. Trump responded harshly, labeling Budde a “Radical Left hardline Trump hater” in a post on Truth Social. Despite this, criticism from faith leaders and organizations continues to grow, highlighting the ongoing tensions between the administration’s policies and religious values.
