Biden Pardons Trump?

In the final days of his administration, President Biden is considering the possibility of issuing preemptive pardons, a decision he noted will depend on the actions and statements of the president-elect in the upcoming days. Despite contemplating various pardons, Biden firmly dismissed the notion of pardoning himself, humorously questioning, “What would I pardon myself for?” He emphasized his innocence and lack of need for self-pardon during an exchange with reporters following an economic speech where he celebrated continued job growth.

Throughout his term, Biden highlighted his administration’s success in avoiding any months of net job losses and expressed his belief that he could have defeated Trump in the 2024 presidential race if he had not withdrawn. His decision to step back was aimed at avoiding division within the Democratic Party, citing Vice President Kamala Harris’s strong potential to win against Trump as a factor in his decision. While supportive of Harris’s capabilities, Biden left the future political aspirations to her discretion, stating she is competent to run again but that the decision remains hers to make.

The president also addressed altering his planned itinerary, canceling a trip to Rome for an audience with the Pope due to the urgent situation of wildfires in southern California. Despite the personal disappointment, he prioritized addressing the domestic emergency. Additionally, Biden mentioned a productive discussion with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier that day, affirming his confidence in Ukraine’s ability to succeed in its conflict with Russia with continued support from Western European allies.
