Biden attributed the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and the resultant abortion restrictions enacted by Republican-controlled state legislatures directly to Trump. He pointedly remarked on Trump’s reaction to the Dobbs decision, which led to the end of Roe v. Wade. “He called the Dobbs decision a miracle,” Biden said, referring to Trump. “Perhaps that’s influenced by those Bibles he’s been selling. I was tempted to buy one just to see what on earth it contains,” he joked, eliciting laughter from the audience. “Let’s be clear, it was no miracle. It was a calculated political exchange designed to appease the evangelical base of his party despite his own moral and character shortcomings, all in return for appointing Supreme Court justices who would help overturn Roe.”
In the lead-up to Easter, Trump marketed “God Bless the USA” Bibles, named after the Lee Greenwood song commonly played at his rallies, and sold them for $60 each. “I’m proud to endorse this Bible and encourage you to get it. It’s time to make America pray again,” Trump stated in a promotional video.
The New York Times noted that while Trump did not personally sell the Bibles, he received royalties from the sales.
Trump has often portrayed himself as a protector of Christian values and has accused Democrats of persecuting Christians. However, his commercialization of the Bible during Holy Week drew criticism from some conservatives.
