Biden Gives Cheney What?

Liz Cheney Receives Standing Ovation as President Biden Awards Presidential Citizens Medal

On Thursday, President Joe Biden awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal to several distinguished Americans, including former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), in recognition of their service to the nation and their contributions to upholding democracy.

Cheney was honored for her leadership during her time in Congress, her work on the House committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, and her steadfast advocacy for democratic principles. As her name was announced, the public address described her as someone who prioritized “the American people over party.” Cheney received a standing ovation in the East Room as she stood alongside Biden to accept the award.

President Biden also recognized Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), who chaired the January 6 committee, for his lifelong commitment to protecting the Constitution. Other recipients included notable figures such as former Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), former Sen. Ted Kaufman (D-Del.), and Mary Bonauto, who championed marriage equality in the landmark Obergefell Supreme Court case. Additional honorees included former Army nurse Diane Carlson Evans, NBA champion and former Sen. Bill Bradley (D-N.J.), and former Sen. Nancy Kassebaum (R-Kan.).

The ceremony celebrated individuals who have made significant contributions to the nation, but Cheney’s recognition sparked mixed reactions. Many praised her courage, while some Republicans criticized the decision. Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) commented earlier in the day, “Biden was either going to pardon Liz Cheney or give her an award. She doesn’t deserve either. She represents partisanship and divisiveness—not Wyoming.”

While the award may have drawn controversy, it underscored Cheney’s dedication to her principles and her role in one of the most consequential investigations in modern political history. The ceremony highlighted the importance of public service and the ongoing commitment to preserving democratic ideals.
