House GOP Formalizes Impeachment Inquiry into President Biden

The House GOP has officially released a resolution to formalize its ongoing impeachment inquiry into President Biden, setting the stage for a full House vote next week.

The resolution, which authorizes the impeachment inquiry, comes months after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) initially declared the inquiry’s commencement in September. The move coincides with a more aggressive phase of the investigation, as committee leaders overseeing the probes intensify their efforts to secure witnesses and documents.

The resolution stipulates that the investigative panels are “directed to continue their ongoing investigations as part of the House of Representatives inquiry into whether sufficient grounds exist for the House of Representatives to exercise its Constitutional power to impeach Joseph Biden.”

A markup of the resolution is scheduled for Tuesday.

House Republicans hope that by formally authorizing the inquiry, they will bolster the legal weight behind the investigation and enhance their ability to compel evidence, particularly in the event of legal battles.

In November, the White House had argued that the House GOP’s impeachment inquiry was unconstitutional because it had not been formalized through a full House vote. This dispute played a role in motivating the House GOP to formalize the inquiry.

While Democrats and the White House have pointed to previous statements from swing-seat Republicans and moderates casting doubt on the need for impeachment, many of these GOP members clarify that authorizing an inquiry is distinct from a vote on actual impeachment articles.

In response to the inquiry resolution, the White House criticized House Republicans for their “stupid stunts” and emphasized that President Biden remains focused on addressing the nation’s challenges while House Republicans seek attention through such actions.

The upcoming House vote on the impeachment inquiry will mark a significant development in the ongoing political discourse surrounding President Biden’s presidency. 🏛️🔍
