Secret Service Shoots Armed Man Near White House
In a tense incident near the White House early Sunday, U.S. Secret Service personnel shot a man following what officials described as an “armed confrontation with law enforcement.”
Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi confirmed that the individual, an adult male, was taken to a local hospital. As of Sunday morning, his condition remained unknown. No Secret Service officers were injured during the encounter.
The incident unfolded just after midnight, not long after local law enforcement had alerted the Secret Service about a potentially suicidal individual who was believed to be traveling to Washington, D.C., from Indiana.
Secret Service agents later spotted a parked vehicle near 17th and F Streets NW, just a short distance from the White House. A man matching the description provided by police was seen walking nearby.
“As officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm, leading to an armed confrontation during which shots were fired by our personnel,” Guglielmi said in a statement.
The event is now under investigation by local authorities, as is standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting in the district. Officials have not yet released further details about the suspect’s identity or motives.
