Apple is addressing a bug in the dictation feature on some iPhones that briefly suggests the word “Trump” when users speak a word containing the “R” consonant, such as “racist.”
The issue gained attention after iPhone users posted videos on social media demonstrating the glitch. When the dictation feature was activated and a user said the word “racist,” the text field briefly displayed “Trump” before automatically correcting itself, according to multiple recordings shared online.
“We are aware of an issue with the speech recognition model that powers Dictation and we are rolling out a fix today,” Apple stated in a response to The Associated Press on Wednesday.
The company explained that the voice-to-text feature relies on speech recognition models that sometimes display words with phonetic similarities. Other words containing the “R” consonant were also affected by the bug. However, The Associated Press was unable to replicate the issue on Wednesday, a day after reports surfaced.
Apple’s response to the controversy comes at a time when the company has announced plans to invest over $500 billion in the United States, hire 20,000 new employees over the next four years, and construct a new factory in Texas. This move coincides with ongoing discussions about potential tariffs on imports. Meanwhile, Apple shareholders recently rejected efforts to push the company toward eliminating corporate diversity programs, an initiative tied to broader political pressures.
