America Gets Bad News After This Action By Trump

Canada and Mexico have announced retaliatory tariffs on American goods in response to President Donald Trump’s sweeping trade measures, raising concerns among businesses and consumers in both countries about the potential impact of a widening trade war.

Canada’s initial tariff package, set to take effect Tuesday, includes a 25% levy on a variety of American imports such as beverages, cosmetics, and paper products, amounting to 30 billion Canadian dollars ($20 billion USD). A second wave of tariffs, expected to be announced soon, will target passenger vehicles, trucks, steel and aluminum products, certain fruits and vegetables, beef, pork, dairy products, aerospace goods, and more—a category estimated to be worth 125 billion Canadian dollars ($85 billion USD).

In response to these measures, Trump dismissed the threat, saying, “We can play the game all they want.” He indicated that he plans to speak with his Canadian and Mexican counterparts on Monday to discuss the growing tensions.

Mexico, meanwhile, has confirmed its intent to impose retaliatory tariffs, though officials have not yet specified the rates or which products will be affected.

The decision by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to implement countermeasures follows the Trump administration’s new tariffs—which placed a 25% duty on goods from Canada and Mexico, a 10% duty on Canadian oil, and a 10% tariff on Chinese imports.

A statement from Trudeau’s office emphasized that Canada and Mexico remain committed to strengthening their bilateral relationship, but a senior Canadian official noted that while both nations are aligned, their tariff responses were not explicitly coordinated.

Encouraging Canadians to support domestic products, Trudeau posted on X, urging consumers to “check the labels” and choose Canadian-made goods whenever possible.

Canada serves as the largest export market for 36 U.S. states, while Mexico is the United States’ biggest overall trading partner. Despite Trump’s threat to increase tariffs further if Canada and Mexico responded with their own duties, both nations moved forward with their plans.

Trudeau made it clear that while Canada is not seeking to escalate tensions, it will not back down, stating, “We’re certainly not looking to escalate, but we will stand up for Canada.”

Officials in several Canadian provinces, including Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec, Manitoba, and Nova Scotia, announced plans to remove American liquor brands from government-regulated store shelves in protest.

In Ontario, where the Liquor Control Board sells nearly $1 billion worth of American alcoholic beverages annually, Premier Doug Ford declared that starting Tuesday, U.S. products would be removed from store shelves and the province’s ordering catalog. Since the LCBO serves as the sole alcohol wholesaler in Ontario, this decision will block restaurants and retailers from purchasing or restocking American liquor.

On social media, consumers have been actively sharing alternatives to American goods, reinforcing the call for Canadians to buy local in response to Trump’s tariffs.

Speaking directly to Americans, Trudeau warned that these tariffs will have “real consequences” for U.S. consumers, suggesting that higher prices could be felt across various industries.

Trump, in turn, fired back on Truth Social, criticizing Canada’s trade surplus with the United States and making a controversial remark, stating, “Without that surplus, Canada ceases to exist as a viable country. Harsh but true! Therefore, Canada should become our Cherished 51st State. Much lower taxes, and far better military protection for the people of Canada — AND NO TARIFFS!”

With tensions rising, the dispute between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico is shaping up to be a defining moment in Trump’s trade policy, leaving businesses and consumers across all three nations bracing for potential economic fallout.
